Acemannan demonstrates high tumoricidal activity. Injection of immunomodulatory compounds like LPS or Acemannan into a tumor induces this tumoricidal effect. Study Summary
Scientists can now understand how Coley’s toxin successfully managed around 50% of the patients with untreatable cancers (i.e. sarcomas). This effect is the result of an accelerated release of cytokines by LPS-activated macrophages. The polysaccharide portion of LPS was demonstrated to be the active part of the molecule. Activation of local tissue-resident M s (e.g. Kupffer cells, alveolar Mos, microglia, etc.) elicits an immune response that encompasses various cellular interactions and activities that aid in defense from a perceived attack by pathogenic or opportunistic microorganisms. Macrophages, essential immune cells, act as directors of various immune responses and activities through the coordinated release of compounds like cytokines and chemokines. They are derived from stem cells in the bone marrow, and serve to detect and eliminate any foreign antigens or microorganisms. Macrophages are activated through the structural recognition of saccharide-based antigens by one of three mechanisms: antigen non-specific, classical or alternative activation. Several studies have demonstrated that the saccharide portions of several microorganisms and plant polysaccharides, like Acemannan in Aloe, are powerful macrophage activators.
