Decorating with plants works well in every room of your home. For example, adding potted plants to a guest bathroom helps enhance an often-overlooked room.

Along with adding a decorative touch, interior landscaping provides health benefits to improve our overall well-being. Not only can plants cleanse the air, they increase a positive environment throughout your home injecting peace and serenity.

Before you jump in and begin adding various plants all over your home, it’s best to know the needs of each species you choose. Different plant types require different care, so you’ll want to place them in a room with proper lighting and in a position where you know they’ll thrive.

Home Decor And Design Ideas For Decorating With Plants

Place Your Plants On Shelves

Many stylists and interior designers place plants on shelving units or mantles. Plant scaping brings a fresh feeling and softens your homes walls and mantles, specifically trailing plants such as String of Pearls, Monstera and Philodendron. Shelves with a more modern and minimalist architectural style lend themselves to succulents and cactus species.

A combination of Spider plants, potted Pelargoniums, and cascading ferns placed on shelves creates a feeling, of the natural outdoors, right inside of your living room.

Don’t Be Afraid To Use More

When decorating with plants, throw “less is more” out the window. In this case, don’t hesitate to use more plants throughout your living room, bedroom, entryway, kitchen and even bathroom areas. To achieve a successful botanical theme, remember, abundance makes a statement. Place gorgeous species on countertops, hanging from the ceiling, on shelves, and in windowsills, you name it!

Choosing a home decor plant with strokes of variegated pink or purple provides dramatic pops of color. When decorating your home with plants, endless creative opportunities exist to create a harmonious and immersive feel.

Layer Plants Using Differing Heights

Plants add depth and interest to simple spaces.  Choose from various shapes and patterns, then display using different heights, either on a gallery wall or on raised plant stands. Arranging plants at multiple heights makes the indoors feel similar to an outdoor jungle.

Arranging plants at differing heights makes your home look like you hired a professional interior designer. I recommend placing plants in white, brass, variegated terracotta or solid color pots, so they don’t compete with the beautiful plants themselves.

Use Indoor Trees

If an indoor jungle doesn’t fit your projects style, use a few eye-catching indoor home decor trees to elevate your space. When using plants for decoration, try a large plant or house tree as a statement piece to create a focal point. A large Olive tree in your living room or Fiddle Leaf Fig in your dining room is sure to wow.

If you’ve been searching for the perfect indoor tree, try using a Fiddle Leaf Fig tree, Olive tree, Madagascar Dragon tree, Kentia palm, or an Elephant’s Ear plant. If you have high ceilings in your living room area select the tallest tree you can find to complement your style and architecture.

Use Plants On Windowsills

If you would love to display house-loving plants, place African violets, Orchids, succulents or herbs on windowsills. Use caution caring for them during the winter on windowsills due to temperature drops. While they thrive in bright light, some home decor plants can suffer damage from direct sunlight or sudden changes in temperature. Indoor plants thrive in consistent temperatures.

Place Plants Around Your Bed

As places of relaxation and healing, bedrooms provide a haven for decorating with indoor plants.  Position air-cleaning indoor plants, such as medicinal Aloe vera, Peace Lilies, Monstera, ferns, Ruby rubber tree plants and Spider plants near your bed, to create a healthy sleeping environment.

Air-purifying indoor home decor plants, such as Philodendron help encourage a good night’s sleep and relaxation. Not only can placing indoor plants next to your bed help create a decorative space, it can eliminate toxins from your bedroom.

Create A Bathroom Oasis

One of my favorite places to decorate with plants is the bathroom. A beautiful display of Orchids around a bathtub and a few hanging plants from the corners create a spa like ambience. Because bathrooms hold humidity they provide the perfect spot to decorate with tropical indoor palms, ferns or giant Birds of paradise plants to create a serene environment.

When choosing which plant species to add to your bathroom, consider the lighting to ensure your plants flourish. For bathrooms with little light,  choose a species such as Monstera, Money plants and Rubber tree plants.
